These pieces started out as 4-inch-thick poplar lumber. The foreplane from 1889 helped to smooth the stock for the thickness planer. After bandsawing the basic pattern, rasps and files were used to refine the shape. The corners of the profile were hand-carved, and a sliding dovetail cleat was made to attach the corbels to the top of the beam.
